Mind your language - the power of YET

🔷 I don’t know what else to do…

🔷 I don’t have any experience of…

🔷 I don’t feel comfortable putting myself out on social media…

I never thought I would start thinking in emojis, and I’ve resisted the urge to tag some on the end of each of the above statements, but how do you feel when you read them?

Ok, it transpires I actually can’t resist it - these were the ones that came to mind for me:

😬

🥺

😫

They just all sound a bit scary and overwhelming, and provide fuel to that part of our brain which is keen for us to procrastinate, because this particular part of our brain (the survival part) doesn’t want anything to change, lest we come to harm – it is great at keeping us safe, but not so good at providing a balanced more evolutionarily-advanced synopsis of the actual situation. Which is really what we need when we want to shift from career misery to career fulfilment.

🔷 Maybe you’re drawing a blank or feeling bamboozled by the various options you’ve read about online.

🔷 Maybe your experience so far has been confined to the world of medicine.

🔷 Maybe you haven’t used social media in this way before and the thought and practicality of it leaves you running for the hills.

I was all of those people, and I know I’m absolutely not the only one.

I’m just going to add in a tiny word and see how it changes the feel of those statements:

🔷 I don’t know what else to do yet…

🔷 I don’t have any experience of…yet

🔷 I don’t feel comfortable putting myself out on social media yet…

The emojis that come to mind for me this time are:

🤔

🤔

🤔

These statements are now talking to the other part of our brain – that more evolutionarily-advanced part – that is curious.

OK, so you can’t do it yet. So how can you:

🔷 Start to identify and explore your options?

🔷 Find out more about or gain hands-on experience of… ?

🔷 Learn how to comfortably put yourself out on social media?

This is all about mindset, and how we can switch from a fixed to a growth mindset. If you haven’t come across Carol Dweck and her mindset work, I’d strongly recommend having a listen to her TED talk as a starting point:

And so my questions to you today are:

➡️ What do you want to do that you don’t know how to do yet?

➡️ And what first step could you take?

Happy learning!
